NYT story on technology in education

This article focuses on K-12 education, but raises some interesting points about how to measure the pedagogical value of technology in the classroom:

  1. "Standardized tests... don’t capture the breadth of skills that computers can help develop."
That sounds like a cop-out. If standardized tests were validating technology, its proponents would be trumpeting test scores; but since the tests don’t show the answers they want, the tests are deficient. I wonder whether studies which do show student improvement from technology are portraying something more like a Hawthorne effect than real improvement.
“When it comes to showing results, he said, ‘We better put up or shut up.’”
    Exactly.
